Disciplinary policies and procedures

The primary mission of the school's discipline policy is to develop a structure of consistency in discipline using a proactive and preventative approach where students develop a respect for others, themselves, and learning. An important element of this policy is how well the students understand the rules and consequences. All students and parents will be asked to sign a form stating that they understand the rules and consequences.

The following rules and regulations are enforced:

Show respect for teachers, administrative staff, and fellow students and be kind and helpful to junior students. Promptly obey at all times.

Help keep noise and confusion at a minimum so other students will not be disturbed.

Improper actions, such as rudeness, foul language, pushing or the lack of respect for others, will be reprimanded.

Students will be charged for any damage caused to property of the school, staff or other individuals.

Students are not allowed to go out of the school compound without prior approval from the Principal.

Discipline can be as minor as sending a student to the principal’s office to counsel. The purpose of counseling is to help the student recognize their mistakes and find positive ways to make changes in the student’s life. Counseling can also help the student clarify the expectations and standards of the school, as well as understand the consequences of failing to meet those standards. Discipline can be as serious as suspension or expulsion depending on the seriousness of the case.

a. Ethos

We nurture our students to grow and develop academically, socially and personally so that they leave us able to proceed into adulthood as confident and qualified people with a strong sense of self-discipline, reliability, responsibility, proper regard for authority and able to establish and maintain positive relationship with others from all walks of life.

We want all of our students to go on to lead happy, healthy and successful lives, with a career and continuing drive to be the best that they can be and to always make a positive contribution to their community.

Good behaviour and discipline are key foundations of successful education at NIEC.  Without an orderly atmosphere, effective teaching and learning cannot take place.  We believe that this can be achieved by reinforcing positive behaviour rather than highlighting negative behaviour. We aim to ensure that every student reaches his learning potential in a healthy safe environment through an enjoyable, stimulating and challenging curriculum which responds to individual needs.

We operate a whole school approach to behaviour.  This aims to:

♦ Promote and improve academic achievement

♦ Promote consistent, positive behaviour

♦ Minimise disruption in the classroom

♦ Anti-bullying

♦ Develop a sense of responsibility and fairness

Poor behaviour of pupils can be changed through the concerted actions of all pupils, staff and parents involved within the school. Prevention of unacceptable behaviour is far better than merely seeking a cure. We have a proactive approach and intervene to reduce the occurrence of poor behaviour rather than being reactive to it.

b. Mobile Phones/ laptop (Electronic equipment and Cell Phones)

Senior students will be able to use mobile phones and laptops in class as learning devices with the express permission of the teacher. Such permission must be sought and received before their use.

However, if a student uses them inappropriately, which is harmful or disruptive influence on the teaching or learning of the classmates they will be confiscated and handed over to the respective parent/ guardian.

If student needs to bring cell phones for communication purpose with the parent, they should be turned off and remain in the student’s backpack. If students need to call a parent during school hours, they may ask to use a school phone.

c. Bullying

Any form, verbal or physical, or any means of bullying or victimization is strictly forbidden.

d. Litter

It is the responsibility of every student in the school to ensure that the school is free from litter. Students are also encouraged to take the responsibility for litter in their immediate vicinity and place any litter in the dustbins placed around the school.

e. Messages

f. Tobacco-Free Campus

We are dedicated to maintaining a healthy environment, free from the effects of smoke. Our premises is a totally tobacco-free, whether inside or outside of the buildings, in the playground/ parking lot. We appreciate each and individual’s commitment to our healthful environment and for observing this policy.
